University Profile

Located in Hohhot, the capital city of Inner Mongolia, Inner Mongolia University of Technology (IMUT) grew out of Suiyuan Higher Technical School, which had been established in 1951 as the first institution of higher learning in the newly formed Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. In 1958, with the assistance of Tsinghua University, Suiyuan Higher Technical School was upgraded and renamed as Inner Mongolia Engineering College, which was first under the direct administration of the Ministry of Mechanical Industry and later under the direct administration of the Ministry of Agricultural Machinery. In 1983, the administration of the College was transferred to Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Government. In 1993, the College was upgraded once again and renamed Inner Mongolia University of Technology (IMUT). Now occupying an area of 215 hectares (3,227 mu), the University consists of three campuses: Xincheng campus, Jinchuan campus and Junggar campus.

Centering around the traditional engineering disciplines, Inner Mongolia University of Technology has now grown into a multidisciplinary university of distinct features after 67 years of development, offering undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programs in as diverse branches of learning as technology, sciences, social sciences and humanities, economics, management, law, education and art. At present, there are 22 colleges (divisions or centers) and 62 research institutes in the University. The university owns 1 post-doctoral working station, 3 first-level disciplines authorized to offer PhD programs, 1 second-level discipline authorized to offer PhD programs ( excluding the first-level discipline programs ), 18 first-level discipline authorized to offer master programs, 10 second-level discipline authorized to offer master programs (excluding the first-level discipline programs ) and 13 specialized master programs of engineering. The University is also capable of conferring such professional master’s degrees as MBA and MEM. Altogether, 70 undergraduate programs are offered at the University. Due to its high quality of teaching, the University is qualified to select and send its top undergraduate graduates to pursue their postgraduate studies without taking the National Entrance Exam for Postgraduate. At present, over 23,000 undergraduates and students to obtain associate degrees, over 4,500 postgraduates and PhD students are enrolled as fulltime students at the University.

From the “12th Five-year Plan Period” on, more than 1,900 research projects have been carried out by the faculties with grants from the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Social Science Foundation, the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (The 863 Program) or the National Science and Technology Support Program. The University has won 57 significant provincial and the State level research and development awards, including 3 second prizes of the National Science and Technology Advancement Award and 25 prizes of Inner Mongolia Science and Technology Advancement Award and the first and second prizes of Inner Mongolia Science Award and 29 prizes of the first, second and third prizes of the government award for outstanding achievements in the philosophy and social sciences of Inner Mongolia. More than 800 patents have been granted and over 3,000 academic papers have been published on journals collected by SCI, EI, ISTP and CSSCI.

The University owns a faculty and staff of 2,026, including 1,312 full-time professional teachers, among whom 176 hold titles of professors, 433 of associate professors, 64 PhD student tutors and more than 550 masters’ student tutors. 89.71% of the faculty members hold either doctor’s degrees or master’s degrees. Among all the faculties, 80 teachers either receive special allowances from the State Council or have been awarded the honor of “The Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Experts”; 1 of them is the candidate of “The State Talent Project” (Level 1 and 2), and 11 won the prize of “Inner Mongolia Excellent Talent”; 12 teachers are the candidates of “The Project of Excellent Talents of the New Century” launched by the State Ministry of Education; 52 teachers became the candidates of “Inner Mongolia Grassland Talents Project”, and 7 research teams have been awarded as “The Grassland Talents Innovation Team”; 46 of them are the candidates of “The New Century 321 Talent Project of Inner Mongolia” (Level 1 and 2), 11 the candidates of “The 111 Higher Education Talent Project of Inner Mongolia” (Level 1 and 2), and 24 have been selected as the candidates of “Inner Mongolian Project of Support for Scientific and Technological Talents”. There are a great number of well-known experts and scholars from home and abroad as the visiting professors of the University.

At present, the University embraces the following distinguished disciplines and programs: 5 feature disciplines approved by the State Ministry of Education, 4 undergraduate programs of study selected as the experimental programs for cultivating outstanding engineers, 1 engineering training center for college students of state level, 1 undergraduate program of Education Reform of state level, 1 undergraduate program of Education Reform of provincial level, 4 provincial level undergraduate programs of study selected as key programs for support by the regional government, and 25 brand undergraduate programs of study of Inner Mongolia. The University has 1 engineering research center jointly supported by the Central Government and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Government, 8 provincial level demonstrative centers of experimental teaching, 18 autonomous regional teaching teams, 16 teaching masters of the Autonomous Region.

In 2006, IMUT was rated “Excellent” in the appraisal of the teaching and education quality of the undergraduate programs of study by the Ministry of Education. In 2012, the University was rated among the Top 50 Best Graduate Employment Universities. In 2016, the University became one of the universities which are supported by the “National Basic Ability Construction Project of Western and Central China (phase ii)” , and it is one of the first batch of the 32 national college students’ cultural quality education bases approved by the Ministry of Education. The University was designated by the Ministry of Education as one of the first 32 culture and all-round education bases for college students of national level. Other honors won by the University include “The Model University for Party Construction and Ideological and Political Work”, “The Model University for Student Employment”, “The Model Educational Institution”, “The Model University for Ideological and Political Work”, “The Model University for Civics Development”, “The Model University for Students Work”, “The Model University for Talent Cultivation” and “The Model University for Promoting Harmony Between Ethnic Groups”.

The University adheres to the concept of open education, having been active in international cooperation and exchanges. Regular cooperative relations have been established with the famous domestic universities as TsinghuaTianjin, with the universities abroad from 19 countries, including Mongolia, Russia, the US, Germany, France, Japan, Canada and so on. In 2005 the university was approved to provide the Inner Mongolia Government Scholarship to the students of Mongolia. In 2007, the University was approved to provide Chinese Government Scholarship to the overseas students. The contracts of cooperation has been signed to jointly construct innovation centers and research and development platforms between the University and both local governments of Hohhot, Baotou, Wuhai, Wulanchabu and other cities and over 40 large and medium sized enterprises,

In 67 years since its establishment, more than 170,000 students have graduated from this University. Our alumni can be found in diverse industries and professions both in and out of Inner Mongolia, many of whom have become the leaders and backbones of large and medium sized enterprises, the experts and scholars of institutions of higher education and research institutes and the key figures of the Party and government agencies at various levels. Standing at this new starting point of history, by embracing the university motto of “Be learned and practical while pursuing high ideals and moral values”, carrying forward the academic tradition of “Seeking truth for its application in the real life”, and adhering to the philosophies of innovation, distinctness, quality, regional orientation and openness, Inner Mongolia University of Technology will work hard so as to build it into the first class teaching and research oriented university in the minority areas with quite a domestic fame.
