School of Chemical Engineering

The College of Chemical Engineering was founded in 1951and it began to offer a four year undergraduate program in 1958. The M.S. graduate program began in 1985, and the doctor program began in 2003. Now, The College of Chemical Engineering has 8 undergraduate study programs, They are Chemical Engineering and Process (originated in 1958), Process Equipment and Control Engineering (originated in 1972), Inorganic Nonmetallic Material Engineering (originated in 1986), Bioengineering (originated in 2001), Pharmaceutical Engineering (originated in 2002), Food Science and Engineering (originated in 2003), Applied Chemistry (originated in 2008) and Safety Engineering (originated in 2010), respectively. Among of them, Chemical Engineering and Process, Process Equipment and Control Engineering, Bioengineering and Inorganic Nonmetallic Material Engineering are brand programs of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Chemical Engineering and Process program has been awarded as by the Ministry of Education the characteristic discipline in 2011  

The College currently has 115 faculty members of whom 21 are professors, 12 are Ph.D. supervisors, 61 are master supervisors, and 52 have doctor's degrees. It currently has about 2785 undergraduate students and about 240 graduate students with 200 in the M.S. program and 40 in the Ph.D program.  

Industry catalyst, nature gas chemical industry, low carbon resource with high value and functional applications and coal based solid waste utilization labs are evaluated as Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region key laboratories. The Coal Based Solid Waste Utilization Engineering Center is a National Engineering Center.  

In the last five years, the College of Chemical Engineering obtained about ¥62-million-RMB grants and was in charge of 215 different projects. 646 teaching revolution and research papers have been published. Among them, 345 papers are indexed by SCI or EI. Most of papers have been submitted by young teachers, indicating that the young force of scientific research has grown up.  

Chemical Engineering and Process  

Chemical engineering and technology specialty of Inner Mongolia University of Technology was founded in 1958, called Inorganic Engineering Major then. The specialty direction was mainly involved in the studies on the knowledges concerning chemical industry design, production process and related scientific research, technology development and management in the production fields of inorganic acids, alkali, salt, synthetic ammonia, chemical fertilizers, etc. The Organic Chemical Engineering was added in 1986 which was devoted to cultivating the professional talents with the related professional knowledges in the fields of oil refining and deep processing, and basic organic chemical raw materials production, etc. Fine chemical engineering specialty was established in 1995. Chemical engineering and technology specialty was a result of the integration with three specialties, namely, inorganic chemical industry, organic chemical industry and fine chemical industry in 1998, and the characteristics of this specialty include combining closely the needs of the autonomous region and the nation for the production technology talents engaged in the fields of resources chemical industry, especially the coal chemical, paying attention to training engineering education and design ability and strengthening practical ability. Chemical engineering and technology specialty is currently the characteristic specialty of the Ministry of Education, the construction project of "excellent engineer program" of Ministry of Education, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region brand program and I the comprehensive reform pilot and key specialty of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.  

The basis schooling system of Chemical engineering and technology specialty is 4 years, whereas the length of schooling could be 3 to 8 years. Based on the services to the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region coal based energy and chemical industry development, this program has been committed to cultivating senior engineering and technical personnel of all-round development of morality, intelligence, physics and arts who should have solid basic knowledge, excellent professional quality, strong practical ability, innovative spirit and high sense of social responsibility, good professional ethics and cultural accomplishment and healthy psychological quality, etc. The talents trained by this major will fill a rich variety aspects of work including engineering consulting, engineering design, technology development, production and operation management, scientific research in the fields of chemical industry, oil refining, metallurgy, materials, light industry, medicine, food, environmental protection and military, etc.  

Process Equipment and Control Engineering  

Process Equipment and Control Engineering is a program belonging to the mechanical category, and it was founded in 1972, and the previous name is Chemical Equipment and Mechanics. The postgraduate education of this specialty belongs to a secondary level discipline named Chemical Process Machinery, which is a branch of a primary level discipline named Power Engineering and Engineering Thermal Physics. After more than 40 years of construction, this specialty has formed its own characteristic of training, which relies on the large-platform of chemical industry, takes mechanical engineering as the main line. It strengthens the design, manufacture and analysis of chemical equipment, the selection and simulation of fluid machinery, and the control of chemical process.  

The goal of our professional training is to produce students with all-round developments, with solid basic knowledge, strong practical ability and innovative spirit. They master knowledge about Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Control Engineering, and can systematically solve complex engineering problems in the fields such as chemical industry, petroleum, machinery, energy, light industry, environmental protection, medicine, food and labor safety, etc. They are expected to engage in the process of industrial equipment, control technology research and development, process equipment design and manufacture, production process control and enterprise management, as well as other aspects of work, with good professional ethics, humanities and social responsibility.  

The professional training specifications are: basic academic training of 4 years (the limit is 3-8 years) with bachelor degree.  

The main courses are: mechanical drawing, theoretical mechanics, material mechanics, mechanical principles, machine design, engineering materials, chemical principles, process equipment design, process fluid machinery, process equipment control technology and application.  

Inorganic Nonmetallic Material Engineering  

The specialty of inorganic non-metallic material engineering was established in 1986, originally under the name “silicate engineering”. The name “inorganic non-metallic material engineering” was adopted in 1998.This program has been evaluated as the brand major of the autonomous region, which is the first undergraduate-level program of Inner Mongolia autonomous region.  

The scope of knowledge has been widened and fundamental education has been enhanced while specialization has been weakened, which makes student more suitable to meet the requirements of society. After 3 decades’ accumulation, cement and fine ceramics have become the focus of inorganic nonmetallic material engineering. By now, more than 1000 students have graduated and they have contributed greatly to the economic development of Inner Mongolia autonomous region and China.  

This program cultivates students with comprehensive development of moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetics and labor. These students should have firm fundamental knowledge, strong implementation and innovation ability. At the same time, they should have the fundamental knowledge on inorganic nonmetallic material science and engineering. After graduation, they not only can take part in the preparation, shaping and applications of materials but also can develop the new technology and products, design the new process and equipment, carry out production management and service management.  

Bioengineering  

The history of bioengineering can be traced back to the 1990s. The IMUT initially established bioengineering as one of the areas of research at the graduate level in 1990. By 2000 when the undergraduate program of bioengineering was formally inaugurated. Graduates had been receiving a master’s degree in biochemical Engineering for 10 years. The Department offers accredited courses including Microbiology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Bioseparation, and related laboratory training. By 2000, the department has applied for and completed over 10 research projects at the provincial or national level, and accumulated considerable amount of experience in bioengineering related theory and practical teaching. Meanwhile, numerous academic staff involved in bioengineering education and research has been trained. Nowadays, with the rapid advancement of biotechnology, bioengineering has become one of the mainstays of the provincial industry. To meet the urgent needs for technical personnel in bioengineering and serve the provincial economy better, Inner Mongolia University of Technology started to recruit bioengineering undergraduates in 2001. By June 2017, a total of 17 years of bioengineering undergraduate enrolments had been conducted, and 12 years of students have graduated  with a bachelor degree in bioengineering from the department.  

The Department of Bioengineering at the University provides two training programs for undergraduates, namely Fermentation Engineering and Biotechnology. After over ten years of development, the Department has been recognized for having a brand major at the University level and provincial level for the year 2008 and 2009, respectively. Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Biotechnology are qualified as provincial level high quality courses. Biochemistry is also a bilingual course at the University level and Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Genetic Engineering, Bioseparation, Bioreaction Engineering, and Fermentation Devices and Plant Design are high quality University level courses. In 2016, the University established the Inner Mongolia CO2 Capture and Utilization Engineering Technology Research Center (provincial level), and the research is primarily driven by Bioengineering and Biotechnology.  

In the past five years, the academic staff of the Department of Bioengineering has been presented with various types of teaching and research awards. These include a second prize for the Inner Mongolia Education Achievement Award and a first prize for the Inner Mongolia University of Technology Education Achievement Award. The Department had four (4) proposals approved from the Natural Science Foundation of China, one (1) approved proposal from the Inner Mongolia Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and over ten (10) proposals approved from the Natural Science Foundation of Inner Mongolia. There was one (1) recipient selected for the New Century Excellent Talent program from the Ministry of Education, two (2) were selected in the Inner Mongolia Prairie Outstanding Talent Program, and qualified with an extended support program. One (1) IMUT recipient was selected for the Inner Mongolia Young Outstanding and Leading Talent of Science and Technology, two (2) were selected for the Inner Mongolia Young Outstanding and Key Talent, two (2) were awarded the Inner Mongolia Youth 54 Medal and four (4) were selected for the Inner Mongolia 321 Talent at the second level. Finally, the Department has also published over 70 academic papers searchable by SCI.  

Pharmaceutical Engineering  

Pharmaceutical Engineering is a new major established after the rearrangement of the lists of majors by Ministry of Education of China in 1998, which is classified into the Chemical Engineering and Pharmacy Engineering. The major of Pharmaceutical Engineering is mainly based on the original two majors of Chemical Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, which have a long history of ca. 50 years in China. With wider coverage and more practical use after rearrangement, this new major meets better the demands of the development of medicine. This major develops fast in China. By July, 2015, there have been 273 universities or colleges established the major of Pharmaceutical Engineering, 280 schooling spots of Pharmaceutical Engineering, and over 60,000 students at school.  

The major of Pharmaceutical Engineering was first set up in College of Chemical Engineering, Inner Mongolia University of Technology (IMUT), in 2002, belonging to the Department of Applied Chemistry. In 2006, this major was adjusted from the Department of Applied Chemistry to the Department of Chemical Engineering. In 2015, the Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering was established. Up to now, 11 graduation seasons have been passed and over 766 students have received their bachelor’s degrees. The number of students at school now is 254. The major of Pharmaceutical Engineering mainly focuses on the unit operation processes and pharmaceutical preparations, including the synthesis, extraction, separation, and purification of the crude drugs, pharmaceutical intermediates, and effective components of natural medicines. In 2012, the Brand Major Construction Project of IMUT on Pharmaceutical Engineering was approved. The scientific research fields of the professional teachers in the Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering are mainly focused on the applications of supercritical CO2 fluid technology in the extraction, separation, and synthesis of drugs, synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates, and explorations of value-added chemicals. Under this background, together with the major of Biological Engineering, CO2 Capture and Resource Engineering Technology Research Center of Inner Mongolia was founded in 2016, mainly based on the CO2 conversion and utilization of supercritical CO2.  

There are 8 professional teachers in the Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering now, among which 4 associate professors and 4 lecturers. There are 4 persons with doctor’s degree, 3 persons with master’s degree, and 1 person with bachelor’s degree. These teachers also won several honors, including the Third Levels of 321 Talent Project in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (3 persons), the Advanced Individuals in Teaching and Education of IMUT (1 person), and the Excellent Communist Party Members of IMUT (1 person). In the recent 5 years, the teachers in the Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering received many national or local government financial supports for scientific researches, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China (4 programs), the Ministry of Education Chunhui Project (1 program), the Light of West China Program, Chinese Academy of Sciences (1 program), the programs from the Inner Mongolia government (9 programs), the programs from IMUT (4 programs), the University-Enterprise Cooperation Projects (1 program), the High-quality Courses Construction Project of IMUT (2 programs), the Education and Teaching Reform Project of IMUT (5 programs), the Innovative Experiment Program for College Students of IMUT (5 programs), and the Science and Technology Innovation Fund Project for College Students of IMUT (1 program). The teachers also obtained some honors, including the Third Prize of Inner Mongolia Natural Science Award (1 program), the Second Prize of Teaching Achievement Award of IMUT (1 person), the Third Prize of Young Teachers' Teaching Skill Contest of IMUT (1 person). The teachers in the Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering have published 4 Chinese invention patents, 2 Chinese utility model patents, over 41 research papers as the first authors or corresponding authors (with 16 papers indexed by SCI), and 12 teaching reform papers.  

Food Science and Engineering  

Along with the social and economical development, the demands for high level talented person are gradually expanded. In order to satisfy the continued demand for food professionals, in 2003, after a full investigation, our school set up food science and engineering specialty in department of applied chemistry. In 2011, from the coordinated development perspective of food science and engineering specialty and bioengineering specialty, the department of food and bioengineering was established.  

According to the school-running orientation and thoughts, and giving full consideration to the needs of development in food industry and local economy, and combining with the resources characteristics of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, we focus on the integration of talent cultivation and social needs, the integration of traditional industry and new technology, and the integration of food science and food engineering. We guide students to strengthen the learning of basic knowledge and the training of practical ability to meet the needs of different employment fields.  

For the training in innovation ability and practice ability were regarded as an important part of high quality graduates, we encourage students actively declare the project of undergraduate innovative test program and participate in the teachers' scientific research. We have cultivated more than 630 full-time undergraduate students.  

At present, The teachers in the specialty are very qualified persons: 9 faculty members, including 3 associate professors(senior engineers), 6 lecturers; 4 teachers with doctor's degrees, 4 teachers with master's degrees ; 6 teachers under the age of 45. This specialty has two professional laboratories of food chemistry and analysis laboratory and food technology laboratory, and it also shares basic chemistry laboratory, biochemistry laboratory, and microbiology laboratory with other specialties. All kinds of experiment analysis equipment and supporting facilities are perfect, which guarantee the 100 percent enforcement of the professional experiments.  

At the same time, we cooperate closely with some well-known enterprises, such as Inner Mongolia red sun food co., LTD, Inner Mongolia ChiYuan wine Co., Ltd., Inner Mongolia astronaut high technology industry Co., Ltd, to establish the practice base off-campus, and it provides guarantee for the cultivation of students' practical ability.  

In recent 5 years, our teachers have taken more than 15 scientific research projects, of which 3 projects belonged to the National level, 2 projects belonged to the autonomous region level, and the funds allocated have more than 2 million yuan. As the main executers, food professional teachers has won one first prize award of natural science in Inner Mongolia autonomous region, and owned 2 national invention patents, and published over 20 teaching research papers and scientific research papers, and co-edited 3 specialized publications and teaching materials. All these have laid a good foundation for the specialty construction and discipline development of food science and engineering.  

Applied Chemistry  

Applied Chemistry was founded in 2006 as a secondary subject of Chemical Engineering and Technology. Since then, Applied Chemistry is expected enrollment of 2-3 classes each year and conferring bachelor of engineering degree when they graduate. This specialty was established for the need of new technology development to produce applied talents with wide-range chemical knowledge and R&D capability. Moreover, applied chemistry features in chemistry of fine chemicals, analytical chemistry of industry, chemical analysis technology, supervision and examination of chemical goods. The structure of knowledge in applied chemistry specialty adapting to chemical and chemical related department requirements was designed to integrate basic knowledge of chemistry and knowledge chemical engineering, in order to train skilled personnel for science and technology.  

Applied chemistry authorized to offer doctor and master degree programs have a history of many years at IMUT. Our specialty has experiences and experimental equipments for teaching graduate students, and teams of academics engage in teaching and research work,. A stable, salient and superb line of research has formed.  

After nearly 10 years of professional construction and development, professional teachers assume the professional courses of the backbone courses, and at the same time bear the experimental teaching and practical teaching work. Each teacher completes the teaching task excessively every school year. They are all well received by students. The comprehensive quality of the professional students is high, whether pursuing the postgraduate study or entering the work unit, they are always approved and praised by the mentor and the employer.  

At present, there are 31 professional teachers, including 4 professors, 10 associate professors and 5 experimental technicians containing 3 senior experimental technicians. Among our teaching team, 15 scholars have been granted with doctorate and accounts for 48% ;13 scholars received a master's degree, accounting for 42%. We have 3 PhD Tutors and 7 Master Tutors. Professional teachers are actively involved in scientific research work, they apply for all types of scientific research projects at all levels, integrate research projects into teaching content, and develop new experimental projects. In the near five years, professional teachers presided over 8 national scientific research projects, and 15 provincial and ministerial level projects, and published hundreds of papers. In addition, by taking the students to companies for internships ensuring that we understand the requirements of production technology in company to strengthen horizontal ties. It will give the students the solid foundation of theoretic analysis ability for their further study.  

The faculty group is the base of establishing the professional curriculum, and it also is the key to the development and reform of the course system. Main courses teaching team of applied chemistry specialty get an honor of "excellent teaching team" of IMUT in 2015 that promote team's construction and complete the reformation and construction of applied chemistry specialized courses.  

Safety Engineering  

Safety engineering was set up in Inner Mongolia University of Technology in 2010 and the Department of safety engineering was established in 2015. With the scientific and technologic development as well as the demand for chemical professionals in chemical safety, a large number of advanced application-oriented talents, with comprehensive knowledge, strong practical ability and professional capability, have been provided in the areas of chemical safety related work, such as supervision, management, design, evaluation, education and training and emergency rescue work.  

By September 2017,132 students have graduated. There are 6 full-time teachers in department of safety engineering, including 1 professor, 2 associate professors, 2 lecturers, 1 laboratory technician. Some of them were awarded The Advanced Worker of Inner Mongolia University of Technology, Outstanding Communist Party Member, Outstanding Staff in Party Affairs, Excellent instructor in the National Challenge Cup (third prize) and Total cup in National Chemical Safety Design Competition, etc.
