The School of Civil Engineering (SCE) has two origins, one of which goes to the Civil Department established in 1951 in Advanced Industrial School of Suiyuan province, the other goes to the Inner Mongolia College of Architecture(IMCA) founded in 1958. The Director of Inner Mongolia Department of Construction(IMDC) Cui Zelin served as the party committee secretory of IMCA, the president of IMCA was the former vice-president of All-China Federation of Trade Unions Seamen's Union Li Dalin while the Vice president of IMCA was the vice director of IMDC Zeng Zexi.
The undergraduate of IMCA sets the department of Architectural Engineering which has a four-year undergraduate program and a two-year associate degree program in Industrial and Civil Architecture, a four-year undergraduate program in Architecture. The Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Regional attached a great importance on the construction to the College of Architecture, and Tsinghua University took the mission of counterpart support to the Inner Mongolia Institute of Architecture. Zheng Fang, the senior engineering and the former deputy director of Beijing Institute of Architectural Sciences, was appointed as the department head of IMCA. (Zheng Fang graduated from Civil Engineering Department of Tsinghua University in 1938). The main faculty members of IMCA are mainly from Tsinghua University, Tianjin University, Nanjing Institute of Technology (and now the Southeast University), Tongji University and other related universities.
In 1961, IMCA was incorporated into Inner Mongolia Polytechnic Institute (IMPI) under the national adjustment and reform of colleges and institutes, and then the development of Architecture was established. In 1975, the Industrial and Civil Architecture Major of IMPI was restored to recruit after the period of the Cultural Revolution, and in 1985, IMPI set the specialty of Highway and City Road. With the development of Civil Construction, the Architectural Engineering Department was renamed to Architectural Engineering School in 2000. For promoting the development of specialties, IMUT decided to divide the former Architectural Engineering School into the School of Civil Engineering and the School of Architecture in 2008. In June 2017, Civil Engineering has pass the educational assessment and authorization conducted by Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
At present, the School of Civil Engineering（SCE） has six undergraduate programs including Civil Engineering, Road & Bridge and River-crossing Engineering, Water Supply & Drainage Science and Engineering, Building Environment and Energy Applications Engineering, Management Engineering and Traffic Engineering. The school was authorized to give the second-level disciplines with doctoral degree in Engineering Mechanics and the first-level disciplines with master’s degree in Civil Engineering, covering Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Heating & Gas, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Engineering，Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering and Municipal Engineering. SCE also has authorized to grant the first-level disciplines with master’s degree in Traffic Engineering as well as the second-level disciplines with master’s degree in Road and Railway Engineering. In addition, the school has authorized to give the master’s degree both on Engineering and Management Engineering in the field of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
SCE has 94 faculty members, including 11 professors and 32 associate professors, 16 teachers with doctoral degree, 51 teachers with master's degree, 13 teachers under doctoral degree, 4 doctoral and 34 master supervisors. Amid the faculty members of SCE, many of them have the qualifications of National Grade A Registered Structural Engineer, Registered Civil Engineer (in geotechnical), Constructor Grade A, Cost Engineer, Registered Public Equipment Engineer and Supervision Engineer. At present, there are 2427 undergraduate students and 315 graduate students studying at SCE.
The building area of the laboratory is 4334 square meters and the area of computer room is 312 square meters. The total value of the experimental equipment is 31,068.6 million yuan. The college has a library, in which the current design norms and standards are complete, and the number and amount is sufficient to meet the needs of students' daily study, curriculum design and graduation design.
The academic atmosphere of the college is strong and has a great influence on the capital construction industry in Inner Mongolia. The college not only shoulder the responsibility of training engineering and technical personnel for the autonomous region and even the whole country, but also undertake a number of national, provincial and ministerial level scientific research projects. In recent years, college teachers have undertaken more than 60 scientific research projects and has won 5 autonomous region natural science award, science and technology progress award and other provincial and ministerial awards. More than 160 scientific research papers have been published in various academic journals and conferences at home and abroad, and many scientific research achievements have brought good economic and social benefits to the construction.
