School of Electrical Engineering

2017/11/10

Ratified by the State Education Commission in January 1994, the School of Electrical Engineering (EEC) was established jointly by Inner Mongolia University of Technology (IMUT) and Inner Mongolia Power (Group) Co., Ltd under the circumstance of a rapid development of electric power industry with a severe shortage of professionals of electric power in Inner Mongolian region. In October, 2005, following a nationwide university restructuring, it was affiliated to Inner Mongolia University of Technology under the auspice of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region government. In 2007 and 2010, having undergone two more reorganizations of its disciplines and programs, the School of Electrical Engineering has been shaped into what it is today.

School of Electrical Engineering currently has:

  • Two undergraduate programs: Electrical Engineering and its Automation, Automation. Both are regional brand programs. Electrical Engineering and its Automation is also the feature program of the Ministry of Education.

  • One first-class discipline of Master of Science program: Control Science and Engineering.

  • Two second-class disciplines of Master of Science programs: Power Electronics and Electric Drives, Power System and its Automation.

  • Two master of engineering programs: Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering.

  • Two regional key laboratories: Lab of Electro-mechanical Control, Lab of Electric Power Conversion, Transmission and Control.

  • Two regional key cultivation disciplines: Power Electronics and Electric Drives, Power System and Automation.

  • Two departments and one teaching center: Department of Automation, Department of Electric Power, and Teaching Center for Fundamental Theories of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

  • Six administrative sections: college administration office, teaching affairs center, research and graduate affairs office, youth league committee, undergraduate affairs office, employment guidance office.

At present, SEE has 75 formal teaching faculty members including 6 professors, 26 associate professors. 21 of them are master program supervisors.

The school has a total of 1,540 full-time students, including 190 graduate students and 1,350 undergraduates. In addition, there are 623 part-time graduate students (master of engineering).

Introduction to the undergraduate programs

1) Automation

The program of automation is one of the earliest programs at Inner Mongolia University of Technology, and its history can date back to the Industrial Automation program established in the 1960's. After years of development and accumulation, the program has rationalized the course settings with various excellent teaching resources.

Based on the researches in the two regional key laboratories (Lab of Mechantronical Control, and Lab of Electric Power Conversion, Transmission and Control) and the educational experiences in the first-class discipline Master of Science program, this program takes advantages of the heavy power generation industries in Inner Mongolia, aiming at strengthening a bond of theoretical basis with distinguished industrial feature and engineering practice.

Upon the award of a bachelor degree in engineering, this 4-year program offers students:

§  Expertise in measurement, analysis, design, and synthesis of the control systems for motor drive, various industrial processes, especially in thermal power and renewable energy industries.

§  A strong foundation in mathematics and physics through different courses, interactive teaching, practical work and industry-led projects that encourage innovation and creativity.

§  Integration of new technologies and the latest research developments. This means students can learn from those at the forefront of their subjects.

§  A wide career selection in electrical generation and distribution, oil and gas, telecommunications, software design, finance, and management.

The program is both a university brand program and a regional brand program. Meanwhile, the teaching team of principles of automation was awarded the best regional teaching team in 2015.

2) Electrical Engineering

Originated from the program of “Power System and Automation” and then formally established in 1985, Electrical Engineering program was the first specialized program for training senior engineers and future administrators for the power industry of Inner Mongolia. It was awarded a regional brand program (2006), and a feature program of the Ministry of Education (2009).

Based on the researches in the regional key laboratory (Electric Power Conversion, Transmission and Control) and the educational resources in the two regional key cultivation disciplines (Power Electronics and Electric Drives, and Power System and Automation), this program takes advantages of Inner Mongolia’s rich natural resources and many local power industries, and aims at the strengthening a bond of theoretical basis with distinguished industrial feature and engineering practice.

Upon the award of a bachelor degree in engineering, this 4 school years program offers students:

§  Expertise in the generation, control, telecommunication, operational maintenance, equipment manufacturing of power systems and renewable energy systems.

§  A strong foundation in mathematics and physics through different courses, interactive teaching, practical work and industry-led projects that encourage innovation and creativity.

§  Fruitful lab-training work in the field of motor control, power system relay protection, power system design, and professional innovation work in power system dynamic simulation and RTDS simulation.

Graduates from this program are capable of engaging in power generation, process control, instrumental maintenance, equipment manufacturing, and related scientific research in power industry.

II Introduction to faculty members

SEE has two departments (Electrical Engineering, Automation), one teaching center (Fundamental Theories of Electrical and Electronic Engineering) and six administrative offices.

At present, among the total 75 faculty and staff, 67 are faculty members, including 6 professors and 26 associate professors. 21 are master student supervisors. And 26.2% of the members have Ph.D. degrees.

Other important facts and figures about the faculties are:

  • Three members awarded the University excellent quality of teaching.

  • One member awarded the Regional best young teacher.

  • The teaching group of fundamental theories of electrical and electronic engineering (2010) and the teaching group of automation principles (2015) were rated as the best regional teaching groups.
