1.An Introduction to College of Foreign Languages

Established in June 18th, 2002, College of Foreign Languages, Inner Mongolia University of Technology grew out of Department of Foreign Languages founded in 1987.  The College consists of two specialties for undergraduates, namely English and German, a dual Bachelor’s degree program of English – International Economy and Trade, and four specialties for Master's degree candidates (Foreign Language Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, English Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature and German Language and Literature) included in the first rank Master’s program, Foreign Language and Literature.  The faculties in the College of Foreign Languages are also responsible for offering public English, Japanese and Russian  courses to doctoral candidates, master’s degree candidates, undergraduate students and students of three-year programs.

College of Foreign Languages consists of such departments, institutions and offices as English Department, German Department, No.1 Public Foreign Language Teaching and Research Office, No. 2 Public Foreign Language Teaching and Research Office, Language laboratory Center, and Library.  Besides, Hohhot WSK Center (PETS-5 Examination Center), Hohhot NAETI Center, Xiamen University Test for Translators and Interpreters are also located in the College.

The College is home to modern facilities and equipment for education.  In recent years, a digital media center and seven language labs, four multimedia network classrooms, a multi-function classroom and two foreign language FM studios have been set up in the College.  In addition, the library of the College hosts more than 10,000 copies of books in Chinese and foreign languages, 11 kinds of foreign journals and periodicals, and more than 70 kinds of Chinese periodicals and newspapers.  These facilities have helped to deepen the education reform, upgrade the standard of teaching and develop students’ ability of independent and creative learning and creative learning.

2. An Introduction to Specialties

Two four-year undergraduate programs are offered in College of Foreign Languages, i.e., English and German.  The students can complete their program, which includes a wide range of subjects and courses, within three to eight years.  After graduation, they are awarded with the degree of Bachelor of Art.    

On successful completion of the major in English, students graduating from College of Foreign Languages will be able to master the basic skills of English listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating, acquire rich knowledge in cross-culture communication, develop a high level of humanistic literacy and build up a solid foundation of relevant knowledge in English and other science disciplines.  The college graduates from College of Foreign Languages, who have received training in English as well as other practical skills, will mainly serve the need of the local economic and social development.  They will become the competent candidates for such jobs as English teachers and researchers, cross-culture communication coordinators and translators in various fields of science and technology.

The main courses for English majors include English Listening, Oral English, English Reading, Comprehensive English, English Translation, An Outline of English Speaking Countries, An Introduction to English Linguistics, History and Anthology of English Literature, History and   Anthology of American Literature, and Academic Writing.  

The four-year undergraduate program for German majors aims at enabling the students to master the basic skills of German listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating, acquire rich knowledge in cross-culture communication, develop a high level of humanistic literacy and build up a solid foundation of relevant knowledge in German and other science disciplines.  The college graduates from College of Foreign Languages, who have received training in German as well as other practical skills, will mainly serve the need of the local economic and social development.  They will become the competent candidates for such jobs as German teachers and researchers, cross-culture communication coordinators and translators in various fields of science and technology.

The main courses for German majors include Comprehensive German, Advanced German, Outline of Germany, Anthology of German Literature, History of German Literature, Chinese-German Translation, An Introduction to German Linguistics and Academic Writing etc.

3. Faculties

A qualified and energetic team of teaching and management staff are currently working in College of Foreign Languages.  Among 136 registered employees, 128 are teachers in all fields.  Among the teaching faculties, there are 6 professors, 32 associate professors, 82 lecturers, and 8 teaching assistants.  Among these teachers, 5 have been awarded with PhD degree, and 105 with Master’s degree (including three PhD candidates).  25 teachers are supervisors for Master’s degree candidates.  More than 70 teachers have the experience of overseas study, work and academic visiting.  In addition, about five foreign teachers are employed on a regular basis.

4. Achievements in Teaching and Scientific Research

Great efforts have been made in the College to conduct teaching and research activities, to further improve the research management mechanism, to deepen the reform in the management system of high-level scientific research platform and in the innovative system of the operation of the research management and to improve the evaluation system of the scientific research.  With continuous progress in the quality of the scientific research, the high-quality research teams have been organized to make further accomplishments in the new era of “the 13th Five-year Plan”.  At present, a complete management system for scientific research has been established in College of Foreign Languages, including the well-organized network, and the standard, effective and efficient research work.  The rich research resources and experience have enabled a number of young teachers to make accomplishments in the research.  With the improved academic innovative capability, College of Foreign Languages has made great progress in providing services to the society, which has helped to boost its reputation and influence.  In recent three years, in the College of Foreign Languages, 2 research projects at the national level, 7 at the provincial level and more than 20 research and teaching projects launched by Inner Mongolia University of Technology have been completed.  Five teachers have received the honor of first prize of teaching achievements of Inner Mongolia.  At present, 3 research projects at the national level, 24 at the provincial level and more than 50 research and teaching projects launched by Inner Mongolia University of Technology are being conducted.  More than 300 academic papers have been published in Chinese and overseas journals and more than 20 textbooks and translation works have been complied and published.

In College of Foreign Languages, with the student-centered principle, importance has been attached to the interest of the students’ ability of acquiring knowledge, applying knowledge and making innovative achievements.  No efforts have been spared in the training of the students into the talented youth with the solid foundation in the foreign language and a relative high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating.  The students graduating from College of Foreign languages will be able to have a broad range of knowledge, excellent ability in learning, critical thinking, creative thinking, cooperation and leadership.  The continuous work in reforming the teaching and education practice, improving the teaching methods, conducting teaching research, reforming the practice teaching, stressing the importance of the standard use of the textbooks and developing teaching materials, improving the course system and evaluation system, and the employment of new teaching approaches will arouse the students’ enthusiasm,  interest and initiative in learning.  This, in turn, will help to bring positive changes in the classroom atmosphere and improve the quality and effectiveness of the teaching.  By instilling socialistic core value into the education, the teachers can help the students to become the qualified talents for the country.  In recent years, under the teacher’s guidance and instructions, students from College of Foreign Languages have participated in such contests and competitions as “National English Contest for College Students”, “CCTV Cup English Speaking Contest”, “Interpreting Contest for Students from Mainland China and Taiwan”, “FLTRP Cup English Writing Contest” with great success.  Since the establishment of College of Foreign Languages, a large number of talented graduates have made different achievements in various kinds of fields.  With their outstanding accomplishments and acclaim received from all sectors of the society, they have helped to enhance the fame and reputation of College of Foreign Languages.
